Maritime History of the Great Lakes

John A. Ryan (Propeller), 1881

Description
Full Text

Some time in May last, Mr. Thomas M. Ryan, forwarding and commission merchant of Central Wharf, brought over from Georgian Bay the hull of the old Canadian propeller AMERICAN, which he had purchased from Mr. John Norris, of Owen Sound. He spent some money in repairing her and converting her into a lumber barge, and christened her the JOHN A. RYAN, under which name she appears on the Inland Lloyd's register. We understand that this season he proposes making her into a steam barge for the Georgian Bay lumber trade, and her engine and boiler have already been procured. The engine will be high pressure with 24-inch cylinder and 3-feet stroke, to which steam will be supplied from an iron boiler 16 feet 6 inches long and 8 feet 6 inches in diameter. Mr. Ryan estimates the cost of the change at between $5,000 and $6,400, and her capacity he thinks will be nearly 350,000 feet of pine lumber. -- Buffalo Express.
