'The TECUMSETH and NEWASH ran aground on the sandbar in 1816, [at Grand River, Lake Erie] which led to their being replaced by smaller vessels from Lake Huron, the CONFIANCE and SURPRIZE. These sister ships, formerly TIGRESS and SCORPION, had been captured from the Americans in September 1814. CONFIANCE, armed with one
32-pounder cannon, was 60 feet long and displaced 50 tons. SURPRIZE had one 32-pounder cannon and one 24-pounder carronade, was 70 feet long, displaced 60 tons, and had a crew of five officers and 31 seamen and soldiers.

Schooner SURPRIZE. Built at Erie in 1812, was originally merchant vessel AMELIA. Became U.S.S. TIGRESS, captured Sept. 3, 1814 and became H.N.S. CONFIANCE, hull raised in 1928.
