Manitowoc, Wis., Jan. 14 - The ship-carpenters and calkers of the Clipper City can not complain this winter. There is enough work in sight to keep them fully employed until the opening of navigation. Burger & Burger have their hands so full that they are not soliciting additional contracts. Their stationary dry dock just now is occupied by the schooner JOHN KELDERHOUSE, for new deck beams, deck, hatch-combings, stanchions; stringers, rail, planksheer, covering board, ceiling, etc., the estimated cost being in the neighborhood of $9,000. The schooner SOUTHWEST is receiving repairs at a cost of about $2,000. The steamer H. R. DIXON is to lengthen 30 feet and receive new cabin, at a cost of $3,500. The sum of $800 is being expended upon the schooner FEARLESS for new stanchions, stringers, rail, plankshire, quarterdeck, cabin, combings and two strakes of topside plank. The schooner MARION W. PAGE is waiting to be docked for a thorough repair of the damage sustained through stranding behind Eleven-Foot shoal, Little Bay de Noquette, at the close of navigation. A new hull 65 feet long, 15 feet beam and 7 + feet hold, is being built for the boiler and engine of the Racine tug M.A. KNAPP. The Northern Michigan line steamer CITY OF CHARLEVOIX has had a portion of her upper works taken off for the removal of her engine and boiler. She is to receive a Hodge fore-and-aft compound engine with cylinders 23 and 46 inches in diameter and 40 inches stroke.
