THE STEAMER EMERALD. - Most of our readers will remember the seizure of this little vessel last Fall by our Collector of Customs. For six years she has been running on the Niagara River between this city and Chippewa, in Canada, is a Canadian bottom and registered under British laws. The bar-keeper on board having smuggled two pieces of cloth gave cause for her seizure. The case was tried in the District Court, at Rochester, on Thursday last, and resulted in a decision in favor of the EMERALD. The venerable Judge Conklin deciding that this vessel was not within the act of Congress on which the seizure was founded. The Judge, however, granted the Revenus Officer a certificate of probable cause
of seizure, which shields him from responsibility for damages incurred by the owners. The case was argued by the United States Attorney Lawrence, for the prosecution, and the defence by Hon. G.W. Clinton.
