Empire (Steamboat), 17 Mar 1846

Through the politeness of Mr. Tibbits we are enabled to present today a list
of vessels registered at the Custon House since the destruction of papers in the
1842 fire. We shall soon be able to give a consolidated statement of the ship
building on Lake Erie, giving as far as possible the numbes of vessels and boats
built at all the ports within 10 years.

      STEAMER EMPIRE. - The new and splendid Steam Boat EMPIRE, built and owned by D. N. Barney & Co. of Cleveland, will leave Buffalo for Chicago on Friday the 23rd of August, at 7 o'clock P.M., without fail. She is the largest steamboat afloat in any inland waters, being 260 feet long and built in the strongest and most substantial manner, with an engine of 600 horsepower. The boilers, six in number and twenty-six feet long, fifty-six inches diameter and twenty-two flues in each, are provided with Evans Patent Safety Valves, to prevent the possibility of explosion.
      The upper cabin is 230 feet long without any obstruction in the whole length, with seventy very large and airy staterooms each provided with wash stand, picture and bowl, etc., opening on the inside and out. The main cabin is in two sets of folding doors divided into a Ladies Cabin, fifty feet long, Ladies and Gentlemen's Cabin, one hundred and thirty feet long, making when the folding doors are thrown back, one magnificent cabin of 230 feet in length, and provided with ottoman's, lounges and sofas the whole length, and the ladies with easy rocking chairs and a good full-toned piano. The bedding of the boat is of the very best quality, the mattresses are of pure horse-hair; eight inches thick laid on mattresses of straw; all parts of the boat are finished and furnished in a style not surpassed by any boat in the world.
      The Steerage accommodations need only to be seen to be appreciated by those moving out west. They consist of four large and spacious cabins on the main deck, one of which will be appropriated exclusively to females. The owners have spared no expense to make this boat the favorite of the Lakes.
      Entire length 260 feet; length of keel 250 feet; beam 32 feet 8 inches; depth of hold 14 feet 2 inches; cylinder 36 inches; diameter of wheels 27 feet 6 inches; length of bucket 9 feet.
      The boat is provided with the celebrated Cleveland Brass Band.
