Jake Miller (Yacht), U75725, 17 Aug 1874

Yesterday the members of Hose VII, had an excursion down the river to Navy Island on the pleasure yacht JAKE MILLER, leaving the city about 8:00. Just this side of Tonawanda on the return trip, Allen Miller, a member of the company, fell over the railing near the bow and was drowned. He disappeared as soon as he struck the water and was never seen afterwards. Parties in several skiffs astern state that they did not see the body when it fell over nor afterward. The boat was turned about but could not find the lost man. When all hopes of rescuing the body was given up, the party returned to Black Rock where arrangements were made for the return of the yacht with grappling irons, and at last account search was still being made.
