Margaret Olwill (Propeller), U91953, 1 Oct 1887
- Full Text
Cleveland - Quite a number of people witnessed the end launch of the barge MARGARET OLWILL at Rootys yard, near the water works. The MARGARET OLWILL is the companion steamer of the JOSEPH P. FARNAN, launched from the same yard and for the same owners about two months ago. The main difference between the two is that this last vessel is thirty feet longer. Dimensions of the OLWILL are as follows:- 188 feet overall, 176 feet keel, 35 feet beam, and 11 feet hold. Her estimated carrying capacity is 1,000 tons. She will probably assist in building the east arm of the breakwater this fall. It is calculated that she will carry the above amounts on a ten foot draft. Her draft was five and a half feet aft and two and a half feet forward. Her boiler and engine are those recently used in the tug PATRICK HENRY. She is owned by Messrs. P. & J. A. Smith and cost is estimated at $45,000.

Cleveland.---L.P. and J.A. Smith's second barge, to be launched from the head of the river bed shortly, will be called the MARGARET OLWELL, in respect to the memory of their mother, Mrs. Patrick Smith, recently deceased. The new boat will receive machinery of the tug PATRICK HENRY, which foundered off Vermillion a short time ago. The JOSEPH P. FARNAN, the first built of the two steambarges for this company, has machinery and will
hereafter care for herself. She has the engine removed from the WINNIFRED, a very good small compound.
