ANOTHER NEW VESSEL.---The new barque REPUBLIC made her first appearance in our harbor today. She is in dimensions 138 feet keel, 143 feet on deck, 29 feet one inch beam, and 11 feet 6 inches depth of hold, and has a burthen of 392 tons, Custom House measurement. She will fill the Welland Canal locks and carry through about 20,000 bushels of grain.
The REPUBLIC was built by Mr. John Oades at Clayton for the leading and commercial and financial house of the lakes, Messrs. E.G. Merrick & Co.
E.G. Merrick is emphatically the commercial man of the north west, having built more vessels, and having a larger interest in vessel property than any other man on the lakes and the St.lawrence. The REPUBLIC is a first class vessel in ever respects, and especially as regards strength and capacity. She is commanded by Capt. Cary, late of the barque PATHFINDER, who is an experienced, capable and skillful sailor. ---- Oswego Journal
