Description
Full Text

The schr. J.C. RIGGS, Capt. Leadley, Cleared from this port on Saturday morning for Cleveland, with a cargo of salt, and encountered a heavy gale on Saturday night she was put back for Oswego. She weathered through the night until 7:00 on Sunday morning, and was within about 10 miles of this port, when a squall struck her, carrying away her fore-mast below the catharpins. A portion of the rigging fell upon deck, endangering the lives of the crew, and in the confusion the mate, Samuel Taylor, either jumped or was knocked overboard and lost. Another vessel, which arrived in port on Sunday morning, brought intelligence of the condition of the RIGGS, and the tug BLOORE was steamed up and went to her assistance. CApt. Morgan had a rough cruise, but succeeded in towing the RIGGS into port during the forenoon. - Osw. Pal., 5th
