SCHOONER SEPHIE SAILS INTO PORT.
Oliver Donaldson's Recent Purchase Arrives Under Full Sail.
Buffeted by heavy seas and fighting head winds most of the time, the little schooner SEPHIE, owned by Oliver Donaldson of Buffalo, which left Blind River, Georgian Bay, on October 31, arrived at this port about 1 o'clock yesterday morning with a cargo of lumber.
The SEPHIE, which is a full rigged schooner, came down from Long Point under full sail. Her skipper, Capt. Peter McKinnon, expected to be met by a tug off the local harbor, but on sighted none he squatted his sails and took her in behind the breakwall through the south entrance. Later on she was towed to Black Rock, where her load of 300,000 feet of lumber is being taken off. She will in all probability proceed to the Atlantic seaboard within a few days, for it is understood she has been practically sold to coast parties to ply in the lumber trade between Nova Scotia and New York.
Capt. McKinnon said the SEPHIE was not hurried on the way down, but was caught out in a few stiff blows and made good weather of it. She is a staunch little ship, 140 feet long 27 feet 6 inch beam, and 10 feet 6 inches deep. She was built at Goderich, Ont., and for years was considered the best schooner along the east coast of Lake Huron. She was engaged principally in the lumber trade between Sarnia and Georgian Bay, and for many years was sailed by Capt. Hugh McKinnon who, on account of his great lungs, was known as "hollering Hughe" McKinnon. Her present skipper, Capt. Peter McKinnon, has been on the SEPHIE for about eight years.
The SEPHIE is the first schooner to arrive in Buffalo harbor in a long time under her own canvas. She is a trim looking craft and Capt. McKinnon says she is a splendid sea boat.
