- Full Text
The fine canal stm. WM. NEWMAN takes her departure tomorrow morning for Syracuse and Albany, on her trial trip, in competition for the $100,000 prize offered by the State of New York. She had over 200 tons of grain on board as cargo. The NEWMAN, propelled with an inditerent screw wheel, made her three full trial trips last year, and made better through time than any other steamer. Obn her last trip she towed 3 loaded boats through from Buffalo to New York.
Capt. Dobbins of our city, having got control of the boat, has applied one of Mr. E.C. Hubbard;s hydraulic propeller wheels, a new invention, and in cooperation with Mr. Jerry Small and Mr. Hubbard, will operate the boat in the final brush and we hope their united efforts will prove successful. In the trials made with this new wheel extrodinary speed was obtained, and much is expected of it.

The canal stm. WM. NEWMAN left Buffalo Thursday morning at 6:40 A.M., passed Tonawanda at 9:20 A.M., and arrived at Rochester at 10 A.M. of Friday, making the distance of 93 miles in 28 hours and 20 minutes, which is about 3 1/2 miles per hour. This includes delays and detentions: the running time would show much better. The engine was running with 65 to 70 lbs. of steam and cutting off at half stroke.
