Algonac, April 3. -- It is understood that the inspectors here have condemned the steam barge BURLINGTON, or in other words, will not issue another license to her. It is also understood that some Bay City or Saginaw parties are negotiating for her purchase, intending to build another hull for her engine. The BURLINGTON is undoubtedly the oldest steam barge on the lakes, at least we can not now call to mind one that is older. She was built way back in 1852 or 1853, and has been in constant service since. At the time she came out there were several more all her exact duplicate, but of them all she alone remains. She belongs to the estate of the late Capt. R.J. Hackett.

The statement in yesterday's Post and Tribune to the effect that the steam barge BURLINGTON has been condemned, is true in every particular. It seems that within a short time past strong efforts have been made to induce the local inspectors to pass her "for just one more season," but these gentlemen, true to their trust, say no most emphatically, which ends the matter. Last year she obtained a certificate only on the most urgent appeals, which, coupled with the sympathy borne to Capt. R.J. Hackett, then her owner, finally accomplished the required result. She is rotten from stem to stern, and such was known to be her condition last summer. Her engine is in fair shape, but the boiler is nearly worthless. At present she lies at the foot of Second Street, all intact, but it is probable she will shortly be torn to pieces. She was built in 1857, instead of 1853, as we stated in yesterday's issue.

The old time steam barge BURLINGTON, which some time ago was condemned by United States local inspectors, has been sold to Messrs. B.F. Smith, of Alabaster and A.F. Ballard, of Bay city. Last night she was to have taken her departure for the latter port in tow of the steam barge MARY MILLS, where she will be rebuilt. The BURLINGTON has an ante-bellum record, having been built in 1857, and so far as age is concerned has but few companions on the lakes- probably not to exceed half a dozen.
