- Full Text
In an advertisement elsewhere in this issue, it is announced by Wm. R. Bates, United States marshal at Detroit, that the Steamer CITY OF ROME will be sold at public auction in that city Aug. 30. The sale is a result of differences between underwriters and owners of the steamer.

The sale of the wooden steamer CITY OF ROME at Detroit, Wednesday, furnishes evidence of the scramble for vessels. The CITY OF ROME was sold by the United States marshal to satisfy a claim of the Detroit Ship Building Co., which was hanging fire because of differences between underwriters and the owners of the vessel, which was ashore last fall on Lake Erie. Vessel owners from all parts of the lakes were in attendance at the sale. There were some twenty of them present. A few months ago the vessel would have been bid in by her owners with little if any competition, but the bidding at Wednesday's sale was very spirited, and she was finally sold to J.C. Gilchrist of Cleveland for $56,040. It is said that an expenditure of $15,000 to $17,000 will be required on the ship to bring her up to her former rating. The CITY OF ROME carries 90,000 bushels of wheat or 2,800 tons of coal on 16 ½ feet draught, and makes about 9 miles loaded and 11 miles light.
