The stms. KIRBY and JOHN MITCHELL which started out from Duluth Saturday could only get 7 miles out on account of the ice, and returned to port.

Duluth, April 20 - A fleet of 7 boats started at noon today in a grand attempt to get through the pack ice at this end of Lake Superior. The chances for success or failure are about even. Boats are the stms. C.W. ELPHICKE, J.M. NICOL, JOHN MITCHELL, F.R. KIRBY (sic), and J.C. GILCHRIST, with 340 bushels of wheat; ALEXANDER NIMICK with flaxseed and EBER WARD with flour. The fleet took tugs with them to assist in this great attack on the ice.

Buffalo Lake Trade - Lake navigation opened early, the first departure being the steamers AMERICA and BRAZIL, April 7, for Toledo.
The stms. S.R. KIRBY and JOHN MITCHELL were the first boats to leave Duluth, departing April 16. The KIRBY arrived at Buffalo, April 25.
