Northerner (Steamboat), 1853
- Full Text
STEAMBOAT NORTHERNER. - This excellent and commodious boat, built at Cleveland during the past winter, especially for the Sault Ste. Marie and Lake Superior trade by the Messrs. Turner, of Ohio City, is now on her second trip to the Sault. We are glad to see capitalists, both at home and abroad, lending their aid in developing the resources of our own Peninsular State. The Northerner is substantially built, 197 feet in length, with a commodious upper and lower cabin, capable of accommodating 150 passengers, besides those in the steerage. Connected with this boat is the 'Manhattan' on Lake Superior, forming a weekly line between Cleveland and the Ontonagon - leaving the former place on Friday evening, and the wharf of G. Williams & Co. of this city on Saturdays, arriving at Sault St Marie on Monday, in time for the Manhattan on Lake Superior. The Northerner is under the command of Capt. Sweet, well and favorably known to the traveling public, while the 'saloon institution' is no less and ably represented by our whole-souled friend, John M. Chase.

The Detroit Tribune says that the NORTHERNER has gone to the Soo. She will be hauled over the portage during the winter and will take her place in the Lake Superior fleet in the Spring.
