There have been 15 steamboats built upon Lake Champlain since the introduction of steam upon its waters. The first was the VERMONT, built at Burlington in 1809, of 167 tons and 20 horsepower. 1st. PHOENIX was built at Vergennes in 1815, of 330 tons and 46 horsepower. She was burnt on September 5, 1819. The steamboats now running are the WASHINGTON, 135 tons; WINOOSKI, 226; BURLINGTON, 460; WHITEHALL, 460; SARANAC, 331; FRANCIS SALTUS, 450.
