THE SCHOONER MATT ROOT SUNK. - The schooner MATT ROOT, which took her departure from Chicago on the 12th, inst., with a cargo of 17,000 bushels of corn, was struck by a heavy squall from the west on Friday morning last, at six o'clock, off the Beavers, and some four miles from the land, and in a few moments thereafter sunk in 80 fathoms of water. The crew were saved by taking to the small boat, with which they pulled to the island, and from thence they took passage on the propeller ONTONAGON, which conveyed them to Mackinac; that steamer being bound for Goderich. After their arrival at Mackinac, the propeller MOHAWK, Capt. Pheatt, arrived, bound for Buffalo. Capt. Horton, of the lost vessel, made application for passage for himself and crew to Detroit, which the captain of the MOHAWK declined acceding to, stating as a reason that his boat was too crowded. The propeller EMPIRE, of the Northern Transportation Cp., a day of two afterwards, came along, the captain of which very generously tendered the shipwrecked mariners a passage to Detroit. The MATT ROOT was owned by Capt. E.L. Horton, who also commanded her, and was insured in the Buffalo Mutual for $10,000. The crew lost all their effects, nothing being saved from the sinking vessel. - Detroit Free Press.
