CLEVELAND Steamer, ran into by a schooner near the Islands and considerably damaged.
Buffalo Courier (casualty list)
March 17, 1848
The CLEVELAND came up at 8 o'clock yesterday morning with a large hole in her side, occasioned by a collision with a schooner about 3 o'clock A. M., near the Islands, she was struck just back of the wheel house, carrying away a portion of her upper cabin deck, breaking into the pantry, and creating no little excitement among the crockery, cook rooms, &c. The schooner made off as soon as possible, and they were not able to recognise her. The collision was a severe one, as shown by the damage to the CLEVELAND, and it was certainly very reprehensible in the schooner, whatever one it may be, in showing so little regard for the lives of the passengers, and the safety of the boat she had just run into. But luckily the wheel escaped serious damage, and they were enabled to proceed. The CLEVELAND will remain here until the fore part of next week for repairs. The damage beside loss of time, $400 to $500. -- Detroit Adv.

STEAMER CLEVELAND. -- We learn that the vessel that ran into the CLEVELAND, on Tuesday night, was the new brig just finished at Monroe. The CLEVELAND'S hull was not at all injured; all the damage was on the light upper works, a fact that proves the great strength of the hull of the steamer, inasmuch as she was struck square abeam by the bow of the brig, running before a violent wind. We learn from the captain that not a particle of rot was discovered in the timbers broken. The upper works of the CLEVELAND will be repaired so that she can leave on this (Monday) evening. -- Democrat
