REPUBLIC Propeller, lost one man off Dunkirk
      Buffalo Express
      Jan. 2, 1854 (casualty list)

      . . . . .

      The mate of the propeller REPUBLIC was drowned on Saturday last, outside the breakwater at Dunkirk. He was coming ashore with others from the vessel, on the ice, and fell through a hole. His body was recovered.
