THE STORM ON LAKE ERIE--PROBABLY DISASTERS AND LOSS OF LIFE
-----------------------------------------------------------
About six o'clock last evening, a heavy storm blew up from the north west, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The rain fell in torrents, and continued for about two hours. The rain over, a stiff "nor'wester" blew up, continued with great violence throughout the night, and has not yet ceased. The lake was lashed to fury, the waves rallying with tremendous force to the shore. So strong was the wind that awnings in different parts of the city were torn to shreds, trees were broken and chimneys blown down.
At daylight, the schooner ANDES, owned by Mr. Walker of Buffalo, was beached. She struck ground within a few rods of the Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad Depot. It seems she was following the steamer CLEVELAND, and as they neared the pier, the captain feared a collision, so he took in a portion of canvass; the wind immediately carried her
outside the pier, and in a few moment she was ashore. She was loaded with corn, which is now damaged by the water, which is breaking over her at each successive wave. - - -
