U.S. DISTRICT COURT- Judge Wilkins presiding. - Harding and Appleby Vs. brig
COLUMBIA.
The libel in this case was filed to recover $1,000 claim of salvage by the
steamer SULTANA.
The brig COLUMBIA was, on the 18th, of September, 1856, driven ashore on the
south side of Bois Blanc Island, in the Straits of Mackinac, and hard on the rocks.
She was taken charge of by Capt. John Munson, agent of the Northwestern
Insurance Company, anf got upon ways and partly launched, but held by her bows
upon the ways. In this situation, on the 13th, of October, 1856, the steamer
SULTANA, then at Mackinac, on her voyage from Chicago to Buffalo, was requested
to go to the assistance of the COLUMBIA, which she did early the next morning,
taking the south instead of the north channel, passing Bois Blanc Island. The
SULTANA, after four pulls upon her, succeeded in bringing the COLUMBIA off, and
was detained in the service a period of time variously estimated by witnesses a
from one to five hours. - Chicago Democrat, 21. (part)
