Schooner E. St. JOHN BEMIS, when loading coal at Pittsburgh Pier, Cleveland, was caught in a gale and sunk. Property loss $3,000

THE STORM. -- On Saturday a stiff breeze blew up from the westward, increasing during the night to a considerable storm. The schooners E. S. J. BEMIS, GERRITT SMITH, and SEA GULL, were loading coal at the outer pier, and on the first indication of the storm, the GERRITT SMITH hauled off and got into the river. The BEMIS had been loading at Stockley's Pier on Friday. In the evening she was towed into the river for safety, and in the morning again went out to the pier to finish loading. When the storm first came on, no effort was made to shift her quarters, but when her position became dangerous, the steam tugs endeavored to get her out, but had not sufficient power. After bumping on the bottom for some time, her rudder was unshipped, and it is supposed her seams opened, as she slowly sunk in thirteen feet of water. The morning the Washington Steam Pump was brought into requisition. The BEMIS is owned by Mr. Esting, of Sandusky, and is insured in the Buffalo Mutual, Etna, and Springfield companies.
The SEA GULL had lines attached in different directions to the piers, and rode out the storm bravely. No other damage has been suffered here, except a trifling chafing by the MENDOTA against the dock. The wind changed to the southeast yesterday. This morning the wind was moderate to a gentle breeze, and the lake is dotted with sail and steam vessels. -- Cleveland Herald, 24.

The schr. E. S. J. BEMIS, owned by Mr. Cheesebrough of Sandusky, sunk a day or 2 since outside the pier at Cleveland. She lies in 13 ft. water. Damage put down at $2,500 to $3,000. Insured in the Aetna. Last account say that the E. S. J.. BEMIS has been raised with little damage.
