FIRE ON BOARD PROPELLER ONTARIO - The Propeller ONTARIO arrived at
this port yesterday afternoon, having sustained considerable damage by fire, which
broke out on board on her way up. She belongs to the Northern Transportation Co.,
and was on her way from Odgensburg to Chicago, when the accident occurred. On the
afternoon of the 8th., when on Lake Huron, about five miles from shore, the propeller
was discovered to be on fire below. About 50 passengers were on board at the time, and
quite a consternation ensued, but by the utmost presence of mind of Capt. Parker, they
were persuaded to keep quiet, and after an hours hard work the fire was extinguished

PROPELLER ON FIRE - By the propeller FOUNTAIN CITY, which passed down
yesterday, we learn that the propeller ONTARIO, of the Northern Transportation
Company's line, bound up, caught fire on Tuesday last, when near Bois Blanc Island,
Lake Huron. The fire caught in her hold, about her boilers. She had on quite a number
of passengers, among whom were some women and children, who were immediately
sent ashore in the small boats. The crew applied themselves to putting out the fire,
which was burning considerably in the merchandise in the hold. After considerable
labor the fire was drowned out, her cargo being seriously damaged, both by fire and
water, and her decks also somewhat injured by the fire. Her passengers were again
got on board, and she went on her way. We did not learn whether her cargo was
insured or not. - Detroit Advertiser.
