NOTE :- Schooner RAPID sunk by collision near Pelee Point, May 1862
. . . . .
On Sunday night last as the schr. SUNBURY, bound up from Buffalo, was passing off the Clay Banks in the locality of the sunken schr. RAPID she came in contact with the wreck, passing between her masts, by which she had her jibboom foreyard and foregaffs carried away, her squaresail badly damaged, besides losing one of her anchors with 15 fathoms of chain. The night was intensely dark, accompanied with rain, rendering it impossible to discover objects at any distance, notwithstanding every caution was carried out in order to pass it by with safety. She arrived here early yesterday morning, and is at present undergoing repairs which will cost $100 or thereabouts, besides 2 days delay.
In connection with the above, and for the satisfaction of those concerned, we would state that the parties interested in raising the above wreck took their departure yesterday forenoon with steam pumps and lighters for the purpose of raising her at once and getting her out of harms way. We wish them every possible success in their undertaking.
