DISTRESSING ACCIDENT--We learn from a friend at St. Joseph, that on Monday last the jolly boat of the schooner Commodore, in attempting to land, with eight men on board was capsized and five of them were drowned. among the lost was the mate of the Commodore.

The boat sent to rescue the remainder of the crew was also capsized; but fortunatley none were lost. The bodies of the unfortunate men have not been found.--The schooner United States has been driven ashore near the mouth of the St. Joseph, and several of other vessels have lost thier anchors.

This is the third and fourth accident of the kind that has happened at St. Joseph within a shorth period. It seems surprising to us that Congress does not do something for the harbors in Lake Michigan. Every year from five to ten of our most enterprising and hardy mariners are lost on this Lake for want of harbors. There are more goods landed at St. Joseph every year than at many of the ports on Lake Erie, where harbors have been constructed for years, and we are still neglected. We do hope that some effected measures will be taken to procure an appropriation, at the next session of Congress, for, for the construction of a harbor at St. Joseph and some other points on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
