GOUDREAU Propeller, official U. S. Number 150476, of 2,298 Gross Tons, and built 1889. On Nov. 23, 1917 vessel stranded on Lyal Island, Lake Huron. Of 24 persons on board no lives were lost. Vessel classed as a total loss.

On November 23, 1917 a howling blizzard swirled across Lake Huron and rolled big green seas into the Cleveland bound freighter GOUDREAU. She took a heavy pounding and when the rudder was carried away she fell off before the storm. Eventually the GOUDREAU fetched up among the giant breakers on the tip of Lyal Reef and slowly began to grind out her bottom. The crew got away when the lake calmed and following thrie report the tug MANISTIQUE of the Reid Wrecking Company came down from Manitoulin Island where she had been vainly trying to save the steamer GEORGE A. GRAHAM ashore at South Baymouth. Before the MANISTIQUE arrived bad weather set in and persisted for several days. The steel hull of the GOUDREAU gradually yielded and by the time the tug got to her she had become a total wreck. The twisted hull settled to the bottom in three fathoms buried by the cargo of almost three thousand tons of iron ore.
The GOUDREAU was built at Cleveland in 1889 as the PONTIAC, a name she bore until 1916, and was owned by the Crescent Transportation Co., Cleveland, when lost. She lay forgotten until 1942 when the mills of war hungered for scrap metal and a salvage expedition carted away much of the wreck. Her bottom plates, lying scattered and rusting among the crags of Lyal Reef, are all that now remain.
