      Marine Disasters on the Western
Lakes during 1871, Capt. J.W. Hall

SCOW AMERICAN EAGLE. - This vessel went ashore at Cleveland Tuesday night. She arrived at Cleveland from Marblehead with a cargo of limestone on Tuesday night and anchored off the port, in waiting for a tug. Before morning, however, a heavy northwester came on and the captain attempted to weigh anchor and make the port, but before they could set the sails she drifted in shore beyond the possibility of escape. She went against the bulkhead of the west pier, breaking in her stern, and then drifted until she grounded. The hull will prove a total loss. She was owned by Messrs. Fisher & Co., of Cleveland, and valued at $6,000. She was insured for $4,000 in the Commercial, Mutual of Cleveland. The captain lost all of his papers and about $250 worth of papers.
