Ther Schooner MYSTIC was run into on Saturday Night about 9 o'clock in a dense fog off Grosse Point, by the Steamer SHEBOYGAN, of the Goodrich Line. About six feet of the bow of the MYSTIC was carried away and she immediately filled. The Tugs J.H. HACKLEY and AMERICAN WAGLE sighted her and went to her rescue and towed her to Chicago on Sunday morning in a water-logged condition. Captain and crew are all safe. -- Chicago Report

The fog continued all Saturday night, and was thick and dense. During the night the steamer SHEBOYGAN, of the Goodrich Line, and the schooner MYSTIC came in collision three miles off Grosse Point. The steamer went into the schooner stem on. The port bow of the MYSTIC was crushed in like an eggshell, and she immediately filled. Fortunately, the weather was still and the MYSTIC was lumber-loaded. She waterlogged [sunk decks to], but the lumber cargo kept her afloat, and, there being no sea on, she did not capsize. The tugs HACKLEY and AMERICAN UNION were sent out and brought the vessel in. The crew are all safe.
The damage to the MYSTIC is severe. Her hull on the port bow, is entirely cut through, covering board broken, etc. She will require a new bow. She is also damaged otherwise. The tugs moored her near the Fulton Elevator, in the North Branch, where she was still lying last night. The cargo is all right. The SHEBOYGAN is not damaged to any great extent.
