Charleston (Schooner), aground, 1 Nov 1844

An old Schooner called the CHARLESTON, belonging to Oswego, we believe, lost on Lake Michigan in December, but where or under what circumstances we cannot say.

      Disasters on the Lake. - The wind has blown a gale from the West and N. West from Saturday evening down to Monday evening, with some abatement it its severity on Monday. The schooner CHARLESTON belonging to Messrs. Fitzhugh & Co. of this place, while on her way down from the Welland Canal, made the Sodus harbor on Saturday night and grounded upon the bar between the piers, where she has bilged and filled with water. Among the items of her cargo was 4,200 bushels of wheat for the Messrs. Kenyons of Fulton, which we understand is insured. The vessel is insured for $2,000 at the North Western office. The Steamer TELEGRAPH, Capt. Nichols came in on Monday from Kingston, and the ROCHESTER Capt.Throop on Tuesday morning from Ogdensburgh. We have a prelude of the gale on Lake Erie in the Commercial article of the Buffalo Advertiser of Saturday as follows: "A strong breeze from the West is bringing in quite a large number of sail full laden, together with several of those vessels which cleared Westward yesterday and the day before, the latter being unable to make head against so strong a blow."
