" The two following disasters were each cases of capsizing, and both vessels of Brigantine rig, one of which was the GLADWIN, which capsized near Point Au Pelee, August,1767; and in July, 1768, the Brig BEAN, at or near Bar Point, Lake Erie. Both crews were lost to a man."

" Carver states that in June, 1768, I left Michilimackinac and returned in the GLADWIN schooner, a vessel of about 80 tons burthen, over Lake Huron to Lake St. Claire where we left the ship and proceeded to Detroit. In another place [p. 130] he refers to the "GRLDWIN schooner, which I since learn was lost with all her crew on Lake Erie, through the obstinacy of her commander, who could no be persuaded to take in sufficient ballast.
