VIOLENT GALE. -- From the Jefferson Republican of April 19th. -- Several severe losses occurred on this lake during the violent gale on Sunday last, the 14th inst. The elegant schooner ARIADNE, Capt. Reid, was upset, in ballast coming up from Ogdensburg, near Fox Island, this side of the mouth of the river St. Lawremce. The damage she has sustained is very great, though it is believed she may be repaired.
The schooner JOHN, Capt. Todd, was wrecked within sight of this port, and her hull now lies at the wharf at the opposite side of the bay at this place. Her cargo, which consisted principally of barrels of produce, was partly saved, some pot-ash, however, and a great quantity of provisions were lost or quite ruined. We have conversed with several who were out in this gale, and all unite in describing it as one of the most sudden and severe that have ever occurred on the lake at this season of the year. It raged for several hours, and it is feared that many other accidents happened which have not yet come to our knowledge.
