STR. GEO. H. JONES IS A TOTAL LOSS
Was Destroyed by Fire Near Parry Sound on Thursday Morning
Was Built Here
The small steamer George H. Jones built in Owen Sound six years ago, was totally destroyed by fire early Thursday morning last, about two miles south of Three Mile Point, near Parry Sound. The Jones was well known here having been built by Mr. Geo. Jones for Capt. Rumley. Last spring she was sold to Capt Hopps, of Meaford after been assigned to Messrs. A.J. Creighton and A.D. Creasor. Capt. Hopps was sailing here besides his personal belongings $500 in cash all of which was lost. The cause of the fire is not known but the result is that the Jones is a total loss and there was no insurance. For the past season the Jones has been plying between here and Parry Sound carrying package freight and has been doing well. It is evident by the fact that the Captain lost practically all his personal belongings that the crew had a narrow escape but no particulars concerning this phase of the loss is at present available. The boat was not well equipped with fire fighting appliances and many requisites to put her in a condition whereby insurance could be secured were lacking. The loss is a heavy one for Capt. Hopps and every one will sympathize with him.
