Platina (Schooner), storm damage, 9 Sep 1839

The gale from the West, experienced here during last night and this morning, has filled our harbor with vessels. Many of them had left the day previous for the Upper Lakes with heavy cargoes, but were compelled to return in consequence of the gale.
There were also many vessels on their downward trip, that were overtaken and driven in. Some of them suffered slight injuries. The Schooner MARSHAL NEY was suddenly struck, and lost a part of her main-sail, all her standing rigging, main-sail &c. The PLATINA is minus her larboard quarter-railing; and the Revenue Cutter struck the pier in making the harbor, and leaks quite fast. The whole of these vessels entered in the night, which is the probable reason why they were not more successful in weathering the storm. The Cutter is under the command of Lieut. Ottenger, Capt. Dobbins being unwell at Erie.-- Commercial Advertiser, Buffalo, Sept. 10.
