Illinois (Steamboat), broke machinery, 22 Oct 1839

STEAMBOAT ACCIDENT.--The splendid Upper Lake Steamboat ILLINOIS, broke one of her shafts and otherwise injured her machinery off Fairport, yesterday morning, and was towed into that port by the ROCHESTER. We understand the damage to the engine was very serious. The ILLINOIS is a great favorite with the travelling public, has been very fortunate and successful, and when the accident occurred was full freighted with passengers and goods for Chicago.

      Accident to the Illinois -This splendid boat left our harbor on Monday for the upper lakes, with a cargo, full and rich as any taken this season. We regret to learn that when off Madison dock, she broke her shaft, which caused a derangement of her machinery, that will put her 'hors de combat,' for the remainder of the season.
      Her whole machinery is so much shattered, that $10, 000 will be required to replace it. After the accident, her sails were used to carry her to Grand River, a point in Ohio, 30 miles east of Cleveland, where she now lies. One of our largest boats has been ordered up to take her cargo and proceed to Chicago,
