Barge ANGLO SAXON, of 314 tons, built 1864, Classed as OO. Home port, Detroit and owned by the A. A. T. Co. On September 7, 1887 vessel went ashore in the Straits with a cargo of cedar and became a total loss. Property loss, hull $6,000 cargo $4,000

Mackinac City.---The owners of the cedar on the wrecked barges SMITH and ANGLO SAXON have an agent here who will endeavor to save the remainder of the cargoes. The deck loads were taken ashore, but the holds are full.

Cheboygan.---The steambarge MATTAWAN returned Tuesday the 13th. having abandoned her barges ANGLO SAXON and SMITH, stranded at Waugoschance as total loss. Two steam pumps on each failed to lower the water, and both are badly hogged. While adjusting the steam pump on the barge SMITH as she lay on her side, the pump slipped from it's position and was thrown violently against the lee rail, crushing Captain Ulysses Surles to death. Captain J.W. Surles, of the steambarge MATTAWAN, brother of the deceased, takes the remains to Detroit.

Cheboygan.---The barges ANGLO SAXON and SMITH, of the MATTAWAN's tow, recently stranded in the Straits with their cargoes of cedar, are fast breaking up. The anchors, chains, canvas, and rigging were saved, and a contract has been let to save the remainder of the cedar cargoes in their holds
