Annie Vought (Barge), u1588, freshet damage, 1 Jan 1887
- Full Text
BUFFALO.---The Freshet that flooded the 13th. ward has subsided, but the ice which went down Buffalo Creek did considerable damage to vessel property. The Barge ANNIE VOUGHT lying at the Union Shipyard, was torn from her moorings and hurled with great force towards the fleet of Line Boats lying at the New York Central warehouse. She first struck the bow of the Western line propeller FOUNTAIN CITY, and broke her loose, passing aft the VOUGHT struck the propeller IDAHO, breaking her loose. The IDAHO's rudder stock broke in two, both pieces dropping on the deck of the VOUGHT. All three vessels drifted rapidly down to the Michigan Street bridge stern on. The FOUNTAIN CITY struck the bridge draw near the middle, but did not displace it. The ANNIE VOUGHT lies next, and is crowded between the bridge and the other two, while the IDAHO is against the Ohio Street shore, her stern half way across the approach to the bridge draw. The IDAHO has lost her rail aft, what other damage she has received, could not be discovered. The VOUGHT is considerably injured, her stern is smashed some distance down, and she is doubtless otherwise crushed. The FOUNTAIN CITY's bulwarks are crushed. (part)
