Barbarian (Schooner), collision, 25 Apr 1887

St. Clair Flats.---The Tug KITTIE HAIGHT, bound down, Tuesday at 1:30 a.m., with schooners BARBARIAN and WILLIAM SHUPE, ran aground at the southeast bend, on the Canada side. The BARBARIAN ran on and swung around with the current, and the SHUPE ran into her, cutting her rail and bulwarks through, just forward of the main rigging, and carrying away the SHUPE's jibboom, headgear and a part of her stem, and after getting clear of the BARBARIAN got alongside of Bedore's Dock. The HAIGHT worked herself off soon after. The Tug DAN CONNELLY, of Sandusky, bound down, mistaking the lights, tried to take the Canada side of the grounded tow and ran on also, just above the BARBARIAN. The HAIGHT released her after daylight, and with the assistance of the CONNELLY, released the schooner. This is only a commencement of accidents at the St. Clair Flats. Were the Range Lights in running order it would not have occurred. The lights will be put in operation the 27th. if the weather will permit the driving of stakes.
