WIRE ROPE FOR TOWING. The captain of the tug John Owen* reports having used for towing on his last trip a steel wire rope one inch in diameter in place of the usual three-inch manila rope. Notwithstanding the severe gale which was encountered Sunday night, and which broke up the raft of 2,000,000 feet of timber, which the Owen was towing, the line never parted, and in fact appears to be as good as new.
