Republic (Bark), collision, 24 Jun 1865

Description
Full Text

Yesterday morning between 3 and 4:00, a collision took place off the Claybanks, Lake Erie between the bark REPUBLIC, bound up in ballast, and the brig CANOPUS, bound down with a cargo of grain, which resulted in the sinking of the latter vessel in about 20 minutes thereafter, in 7 fathoms of water. The damages sustained by the bark was the loss of her jibboom, bowsprit and head gear, with some slight bruises to her bow. The brig had 16,500 bu. wheat on board and was bound for buffalo. She was 386 tons burthen, and came out new in 1855. Her owners, we believe, are Munn & Scott of Chicago. The crew were
saved, but lost all they possessed on board.
