Chieftain (Barge), U127703, aground, 1 Jul 1911

The work of lightering the cargo of iron ore on the stm. SHENANDOAH, which stranded with the barge CHIEFTAN in the Niagara River opposite Riverside park was begun yesterday morning, but at nightfall the boat was still hard aground. The wreckers did not touch the barge.
Tugs and the lighter OLGA worked on the steamer. Several hundred tons of ore were taken off, but the boat stuck to the bottom. Much more of the cargo will have to be taken out before release is possible

      EFFORTS MADE TO RELEASE VESSELS
      SHENANDOAH and CHIEFTAIN, Aground in River, May Be Floated Today.
      The steamer SHENANDOAH and barge CHIEFTAIN, Which struck bottom in the Niagara River on Tuesday, may be released today. Tugs and the lighter OLGA were at work lightering the vessels yesterday afternoon and evening. The work continued through the night and it is probable that both vessels will float this afternoon.

The steamer SHENANDOAH which with the barge CHIEFTAIN, grounded in the Niagara River last Tuesday, was released yesterday morning. It is thought that the barge will be floated today.
