Globe (Steamboat), lightning, 7 Aug 1853

THE STEAMER GLOBE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. - We learn from Capt. Pratt, of the
steamer GLOBE, which arrived early this morning from Chicago, that she was struck by lightning during the storm on Sunday last on Lake Huron. The lightning first struck the crank by which the steamer's boats is lowered or hoisted, the fluid then passing along an iron rod to the upper part of a state room on the starboard side of the vessel, then along the iron rod which sustain the curtains in the berths to the upper saloon, then passing down the partition to the chains leading from the wheel to the helm. The fluid here seperated, part following the chains to the wheel-house, knocking down the helmsman and injuring the wheel. Part of the fluid also passed along the chain to the stern of the vessel, knocking down several persons who stood at that part of the boat Beyond scorching the paint and tearing up a few boards, the boat sustained no material damage.
