Rocket (Propeller), U21144, aground, 11 Jul 1859

The prop. ROCKET, Capt. Rice, of the New York Central Railroad Line, went ashore in the thick fog on North Point about 4:00 this morning. She was on her way up, with a full cargo of merchandise for this port and Chicago, with iron and other heavy freight on deck. The steam tugs TIFT and NOTTER have been engaged during the day with scows taking off her cargo and bringing it in, when the steam pump will be put to work, and she will be pulled off and brought in. Most, if not all, of the cargo will be saved. She lies a few rods from the
beach, with a hole stove in her hull, and about 9 ft. of water in her hold. There were several passengers aboard, who were brought in this morning all safe As the weather is fair she will doubtless be got off speedily, and the damage shortly repaired. - Milwaukee News, Saturday
      Later - The following relative to the ROCKET is from the Chicago Press and Tribune of yesterday:
      "The tug McQUEEN went Saturday evening to the assistance of the prop. ROCKET, which went ashore the night before just below Milwaukee, and succeeded in getting her off last night and towing her into Milwaukee, where she will go into drydock for repairs. The ROCKET was somewhat injured, and leaked badly, it takes 3 pumps to keep her afloat, a large hole having been undoubtedly knocked in her bottom. The ROCKET is running in the New York Central Line, and was bound for this port with an assorted cargo of merchandise."
