Henry Hagar (Schooner), collision, 24 Nov 1859

The prop. ROCKET which passed down yesterday, reports that during the storm of Thursday last (11/24) the schr. HAGAR, at anchor in Mackinaw Straits, dragged foul of the schr. RACER, carrying away her jibboom, bowsprit and slacking up her head stays. The captain of the RACER, being alarmed for the safety of his spars, sent 2 men aloft to fasten a line to the mainmast head. After the men had got aloft the foremast came down, breaking off near the deck, bringing with it also the mainmast and the 2 men to the deck; one of the men had his thigh broken, while the other was uninjured. The first mate, in attempting to rescue the men from the wreck, was caught by the rolling of the mainmast and had his leg broken.
The tug LEVIATHAN arrived on Sunday and took the men to Mackinaw, where they were properly cared for. The RACER was towed to Mackinaw on Monday, where she now lies, but will be towed here in the course of a week.
