Sand Beach, Sept. 5 - The steam barge ARCTIC sprung a leak off White Rock this morning and sank in deep water. The crew made a hasty run for their boats and all got on board the consort safely.
The ARCTIC was loaded with coal for Escanaba from Toledo. The Arctic is owned by Underwood and others of Menominee and valued at $25,000. She was called a good boat, and had an A 2 rating, although quite old.
The old stmr. ARCTIC which sank in deep water on Lake Huron was built in Cleveland in 1864 and registers 411 net tons. She is insured for $21,425 all placed through Smith, Davis & Co. of this city.
