Samson (Propeller), fire, 25 Jul 1865
- Full Text
On Saturday morning, the new and splendid tug boat SAMSON, was burned to the water's edge, off Bar Point, Lake Erie. She took fire about 5:00 on her way to Malden for fuel, after towing a large raft out of the river. The flames spread so rapidly, that all hopes of saving her were abandoned, and headed her for the shore, she was scuttled, and sunk in 2 1/2 fathoms of water. She was owned by Messrs. Norris & Neelon, St. Catharines, C.W., and was valued at $30,000.

The parties engaged in raising the wreck of the tug SAMSON at Malden, under the supervision of Capt. Fortier Provincial Marine Inspector, have accomplished their work and succeeded in towing the remains of the hull to this city for further disposition. What remains of this once noble steamer can prove of no avail whatever, so far as rebuilding for the former or any other prupose. The interior of the hull is sadly charred up, and would require but a slight pressure to cause it to seperate into two parts. Her machinery, which we are assured was one of the finest on the lakes, is also badly used up, and, with here and there an exception, can be of no further service. Yesterday the parties interested were holding a survey on the wreck and machinery.
