The steambarge ALPENA was destroyed by fire on Lake St. Clair Monday night. The crew managed to get aboard her tow. The ALPENA with the barg ANTELOPE, CITY OF THE STRAITS and POTTER in tow, was bound down, lumber laden from Marquette. The barges are at anchor near the scene of the disaster, about three miles below the canal. The ALPENA was owned by J.W. Westcott of Detroit and valued at $24,000.

      Detroit, Oct. 27. -- The wreck of the burned steam barge ALPENA has sunk in Lake St. Clair about three miles below the channel and half a mile eastward of the course between Grosse Pointe and the canal. The fire originated from a lamp explosion. The crew escaped in the yawl.

      A lamp explosion caused the steamer ALPENA to burn and sink on Lake St. Clair, Monday. She was owned by J.A.W. Westcott of' Detroit and valued at $24,000.
