Bay City, Aug. 21 - Yesterday forenoon the barge MORNING STAR was towed down from up-town by the tug HUNTER to complete her load at this port. Soon after she had passed below the Twenty Third Street bridge her forecastle caught fire, probably from a spark from the tug. She was running head to the wind, but was put about, and the tug CORA B., which was near at hand, brought her hose to bear on her, and was finally assisted by the city hose in time to save the vessel and cargo. The inside of the forecastle, with its contents, were nearly all destroyed. Aside from this the captain claims that the barge or cargo was not damaged, and that his load will be completed, and he will go out as usual, temporary bunks being prepared for the sailors. The captain filed a protest against any damage that might be claimed by owners of the cargo.
