Sault Ste. Marie, Oct. 27. -- A steamer arriving down reports that the steamer SOVEREIGN, towing the schooner SLIGO, has foundered on Lake Superior, and that the crew escaped to the SLIGO.

      The report of the foundering of the Canadian steamer SOVEREIGN, first reported in the Enquirer yesterday, was confirmed by later dispatches. She sprung a leak which her pumps could not keep down, and foundered before she could reach Lamb Island. The SOVEREIGN was built in 1873 at St. Catharines, was valued at $12,000, and insured by Smith, Davis & Co. of this city for $10,000. The crew of the lost steamer was saved by the SLIGO.

      The Canadian steamer SOVEREIGN, bound from Port Arthur to Kingston and loaded with grain, foundered in 70 fathoms of water off Whitefish Point in Monday's gale. The crew was saved and brought to Sault Ste. Marie by the steamer SITKA. The accident was caused by the breaking of the stern pipe.

The Canadian propeller SOVEREIGN, which foundered on Lake Superior Monday with a cargo of 18,000 bushels of wheat, was owned by the Northwestern Transportation Company and hailed from St. Catharines.
