S. K. Williams (Canal Boat), aground & sunk, 23 Jul 1858
- Full Text
CANAL BOAT SUNK. - The boat "S.K. WILLIAMS," belonging to the New York and Western States Line, while in tow of the steam tug McDONALD, on her way to New York, ran on the rocks near Van Wie's Point on Friday evening and sunk. The WILLIAMS was laden with flour, and had a deck load of staves. Her cargo is probably insured. If blame can be attached to any person, it must be to the person in charge of the WILLIAMS, for he allowing her stern to swing on the rocks.

The loss by the sinking of the canal boat S.K. WILLIAMS, at Van Wie's Point on Monday night, will prove heavy. She had in her hold nearly twelve hundred barrels of flour, and on deck forty-five hundred staves. Her cargo was partially insured in the Corn Exchange Company. On Wednesday morning the agent of the Company, Mr. Badcock, went down to the scene of the disaster, with a steam tug, a barge and a gang of men, and succeeded in taking out one hundred barrels of flour, dry, and saving all the staves. Being thus relieved, the WILLIAMS floated and was towed back to Albany. The damage will, probably, exceed the amount for which the cargo was insured. At the time of the accident
she was in tow of the steamer McDONALD, and, sailing wide of the channel, struck on a rock.
