Free Trader (Schooner), gale damage, 23 Nov 1845

During the day yesterday several vessels arrived, all more or less injured. Among the number were the schooner VELOCITY, Hawkins; schooner AINSWORTH with part of her main rigging carried away; brigs S.C. WALBRIDGE and FREEMAN and schr. TOLEDO, Capt. Van Buren, and FREE TRADER. Part of these sailed from here on Saturday with the fleet and were driven back. A man by the name of Neal Smith was killed on board the FREE TRADER, just as she made the chop of the piers, by the jibing of her fore boom. He was a native of Canada and much esteemed as an excellent seaman. This vessel lost her bowsprit.
